Chinese premier stitches a shoe upper during Dongguan visit

China’s premier, Wen Jiabao, visited a footwear factory during an official tour of Guangdong Province.

During his visit to the city of Dongguan, he spent time at footwear manufacturer Oases. He wanted to see the shop floor and tried his hand at operating one of the stitching machines, putting the stitches into a shoe upper.

Mr Wen said manufacturing firms in Guangdong must invest in new technology and automation and work hard to find new markets following a downturn in export sales to North America and Europe.
