Only a fifth of shoes sold in Venezuela are made locally

In comments to local media Mr Moreti called on the government to take steps to protect local manufacturers now that Venezuela has taken up full membership of the Mercosur trading bloc, allowing, after a period of adjustment, free trade with large footwear producers such as Brazil and Argentina.
“We have to sit down right away to agree a strategy,” Mr Moreti said. “If local manufacturers still have a 20% market share in Venezuela, it’s because of tradition more than anything else. We need to bring in new technology and make shoes that will sell in export markets.”
