School shoes idea moves to Peru

26/07/2012
Following the example of El Salvador, the government of Peru has announced that it will hand out shoes to 2.3 million schoolchildren.

Children aged between six and 13 at more than 40,000 schools throughout the South American country will receive the shoes as part of a school package, which will also include a uniform and school materials.

The government said it was implementing the idea as part of a wider social inclusion programme; children in mountain, coastal and rainforest communities will be the principal recipients of the products. However, the move is also a boost for small and medium-sized footwear and clothing manufacturers across the country.
