Employment in the Brazilian footwear manufacturing sector fell by 3.3% during the first half of 2012, compared to the same period in 2011.

At the end of the January-June 2012 period, industry association Abicalçados said Brazil’s footwear production sector employed 351,000. The figure at the end of the first six months of 2011 was 363,000.

Four of Brazil’s principal footwear-manufacturing states, Rio Grande do Sul, São Paulo, Ceará and Bahia, all registered job losses in the sector. Rio Grande do Sul, which is home to one-third of all Brazilian shoe production jobs, lost 5.5% of the workforce over the period in question, but still has 115,000 workers in the footwear manufacturing industry. São Paulo has 65,000, Ceará almost 62,000 and Bahia close to 35,000.
