Italian shoe industry calls for urgent action

Italy’s footwear manufacturers association ANCI has issued a statement calling on the Italian government to take urgent action to encourage growth. The association said recently published export figures for the first quarter of 2012 were “worrying”.

Italian shoes registered a 3.5% increase in the value of its exports during the quarter compared to the first three months of 2011 and a 15% rise in the average price per pair. However, in terms of volume, the number of pairs of shoes fell by 10%.

“We are seriously worried about the situation facing the international markets, and about certain alarming signals that have reached us from important exportat areas, such as Russia and the Ukraine,” said ANCI president, Cleto Sagripanti, on making the announcement. “These signals, from an industry such as ours, which has revealed an uncommon ability to react in times of crisis, clearly reveal that it is time to act without further delay, combining the strength and passion of our industry with concrete supporting actions by the institutions.”
