Keen sponsors mountain clean-up events
Outdoor enthusiasts have been offered the chance to clean
up the environment as a Europe-wide scheme is extended to the UK for the first
time.
The Respect the Mountains Envirotrek Mountain Clean Up
will take place in the Peak District on August 5 and will be sponsored by
outdoor footwear brand Keen.
Participants will help to collect rubbish and other waste
at the site in Bamford. After the clean-up, they can choose from a range of
outdoor activities to take part in, including climbing, mountain biking,
canyoning and caving.
A spokesperson for Keen said: "Popular mountain
destinations are becoming increasingly in need of on-the-ground action to clear
them of waste in order to maintain their natural beauty and enjoyment for
generations to come.
"Through last year’s Envirotrek initiatives, more than
500kg rubbish was cleared in 445 hours across four European Countries, with
some of the more unusual items collected from their efforts including a US Army
oil barrel from World War Two.
"Envirotrek gives people the opportunity to give something back to their environment while enjoying some playtime in the great outdoors."
Envirotrek clean-ups have already taken place in Schoorl
in the Netherlands, and Einruhr in Germany. Similar events are due to take place
in Schauinsland in Germany, Mayrhofen in Austria, Garmisch Partenkirchen in
Germany and Samoëns in France.
