Vietnam wins anti-dumping lawsuit in Brazil
Vietnam has won
its lawsuit relating to anti-dumping duties on footwear exports to Brazil.
Brazil imposed anti-dumping tariffs on Chinese footwear
products in 2009. Since then, Chinese footwear exports to Brazil have fallen
16%, while shipments of similar products from Vietnam rose 30%.
With Vietnamese products accounting for 22% of Brazil’s total footwear import
turnover, authorities suspected that Vietnam was evading anti-dumping duties.
It was thought Vietnamese footwear exports were being manufactured in China and
sent through Vietnam in a bid to bypass anti-dumping tariffs.
According to the Vietnam Competition Administration (VCA), the court ruled that
no Vietnamese manufacturers have evaded the anti-dumping taxes imposed upon its
sport and casual shoe exports. This judgment was reached following a nine-month
administrative review.
In 2011, Vietnamese footwear exports to Brazil were worth $180 million and the
country’s total footwear export turnover rose 28% to $6.6 billion.
