Bata to invest $15 million in shoe manufacture and retail in India

Footwear manufacturer and retailer, Bata India held its annual general meeting for 2012 in Kolkata on May 30 and announced that it will invest $12.5 million this year opening at least 100 new retail outlets across India.

In addition, the company said it would invest more than $2.5 million in each of the next three years in modernisation and expansion projects at footwear factories the company runs in three Indian cities, Patna, Batanagar and Bangalore.

Rajeev Gopalakrishnan, the company’s managing director in India said during a press conference at the end of the meeting that the investment in the three factories would produce an increase in capacity of around 20%.

He also said that Bata expects the share of women’s and children’s shoes among its total sales in India to go up from around 22% at the moment to around 30% by the end of 2012.
