Tunisia: job-seekers halt footwear production on first day

21/05/2012
An Italian-owned footwear and leathergoods manufacturer called Stork opened a new production facility at Béja in Tunisia on May 7. However, a mere two hours after the machines started running, the company had to halt production.

Production manager, Mahfoudh Mahmoudi, told media that an initial workforce of 70 local people had begun the first production run that day, but only after formal training from the company over a period of months. Stork has made it clear that it intends to create more jobs in the near future as the Béja facility’s capacity expands.

Around 500 unemployed local people lost patience and went to the factory on the first morning to demand work and the company had to stop production for security reasons and to explain its future recruitment plans.
