Trade unions threaten to take footwear bodies to court

Two of Spain’s biggest trade unions have accused footwear manufacturers there of going back on a commitment to review shoe industry workers’ salaries and have said they intend to take industry bodies FICE, the Spanish Footwear Industry Federation, and AEC, the Spanish Association of Footwear Component Manufacturers, to court.

The unions, UGT and CCOO, insist that footwear companies signed up to an agreement last year committing them to a salary review when an earlier agreement expired on March 1, but that, in spite of two months of negotiations, workers’ wages have stayed the same. They have asked the official arbitration service, SIMA, to intervene and have warned that they will take the matter to court if necessary. The dispute affects an estimated 23,000 footwear industry workers across Spain, 65% of them in the province of Alicante.

Footwear industry representatives, Juan Antonio Maciá for UGT and José Torregrosa for CCOO, held a joint press conference in Elche at the start of May to say that they intend to launch a campaign across footwear factories to make sure workers understand what the dispute is about.

Mr Maciá said he thought some companies were dragging their feet because they are waiting for wider labour reforms from the Spanish government.
