Brazilian company says new glue is part of complete soling package

Brazilian supplier of components and adhesives to the footwear industry, Grupo FCC, has reported strong progress with a new water-based product for thermoplastic rubber (TR) soling materials, Fortik Acquafort 9500 TR. FCC has estimated that around 30% of the 900 million pairs of shoes made in Brazil each year have TR soles.

FCC has said shoe manufacturers can apply the new product without primer and that early reaction to the product from the footwear sector has been more positive than expected. Several manufacturers are already using the product and have reported savings in production costs thanks to a reduction in the amount of re-work operators have to carry out, as well as savings in protective equipment for workers.

“This solves one of the critical issues in the shoe production process,” FCC said. “Errors in the application of primers have, traditionally, been one of the main reasons for shoes being returned to the manufacturer.”

The company went on to say that Fortik Acquafort 9500 TR would also lead to “a drastic reduction” in the use of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the footwear manufacturing process.

Valdemar Masseli, director of the adhesives side of FCC’s business, said in recent comments to Brazilian media that the company saw Fortik Acquafort 9500 TR as part of a package it wanted to present to footwear companies using its Fortiprene TR soling materials. “This is about offering a complete solution,” he said, “of soling materials and adhesive.”
