Marie Antoinette’s shoes auctioned for nearly $60k

30/03/2012

The shoes of Marie Antoinette, once the queen of France, have been sold at auction for $57,000. The ivory silk mules are likely to have been worn by Marie Antoinette during her reign, and they may have been worn to La Fête de la Fédération on July 14, 1790. Scholars believe this to be the case, as the shoes feature tricolour ribbons, a nod to the French flag and a symbol of French culture on a day of nationalist pride honouring the storming of the Bastille one year prior.

The silk mules measure in at 36.5 European, or 6.5 in US sizing.
