Mutual appreciation between luxury footwear brand and Tokyo

A high-end menswear store in the Tokyo district of Harajuku gave pride of place in a recent window display to custom-made shoes from London-based George Cleverley.

Unusually, the shoes in the display were not for sale; they were all owned by directors of the menswear company, Beams. They felt vintage bespoke shoes from George Cleverley helped project the image of Beams that they want to put across to Tokyo consumers.

After the window display appeared, the chief executive of the luxury footwear brand, George Glasgow, told the Financial Times that Cleverley has been selling its shoes, at several thousand pounds a pair, in Tokyo for more than 20 years. He said: “Tokyo has always been a stylish city that appreciated classic styles more than any other Asian city.”
