Salvadorean government sponsors leather shoes for schoolchildren

The government of El Salvador has commissioned footwear manufacturers throughout the country to make 1.3 million pairs of leather shoes for schoolchildren.

Each year, the government includes good-quality shoes in what it calls “the School Package”, which children in state schools, from pre-school until ninth grade, receive so that their education puts little or no strain on their families’ incomes. The package provides each child at around 4,900 state schools with reading and writing materials and a full uniform, including shoes.

Government estimates are that around 240 footwear manufacturers throughout El Salvador, most of them small companies, will share the $18 million that the education ministry has devoted to shoes out of an overall School Package budget of $75 million.
