High rents slow up store openings in China

Chinese footwear brand Anta has said it will open far fewer new stores in its domestic market in 2012 than in previous years. The company currently has 7,778 stores across China and may increase this by as few as 20 new outlets this year.

In the course of 2011, Anta opened 229 new stores, and in 2010 the figure was 958.

Its public relations manager, Yuan Wei, said recently that high rental costs on retail property in many Chinese cities was holding Anta and other Chinese companies from continuing the expansion of their retail presence at the same rate as in recent years.
