La Rioja registers record shoe export earnings in 2011

Spanish autonomous community La Rioja has reported higher export revenues from footwear in 2011 than in any previous year.

Footwear manufacturers in La Rioja earned EUR 182 million in the course of the year from overseas clients, a figure that represents a 7% increase compared to 2010.

Local footwear industry association AICCOR has pointed to a growing interest among its member companies in export markets. Secretary of the organisation, Javier Oñate, said on announcing the 2011 figures that this was a reflection of how difficult the domestic Spanish market has become since the economic downturn of the last few years.

Mr Oñate pointed out that export earnings for the local footwear industry have grown by almost 40% since 2007 and by 134.7% since 2001. He said this showed how hard local companies have worked to become international footwear brands and to turn interest from customers outside Spain into a competitive advantage.
