Leather gives Argentinean shoes a competitive advantage

10/02/2012
The general secretary of the Argentinean footwear industry association CIC, Horacio Moschetto, has confirmed that his organisation has high hopes for increasing exports in 2012 and that manufacturers' commitment to using leather in their shoes is one of the main reasons for their optimism.

Apart from fashion shoes in the Americas and other parts of the world, Argentinean footwear manufacturers have won the interest of wealthy consumers in China and Japan because of their skill in making specialist boots for the sport of polo and specialist shoes for the tango.

In comments made to World Footwear magazine, Mr Moschetto has explained: “The success we have had is down to the fact that the Argentinean footwear industry has always counted on leather as its main raw material. This is a competitive advantage and it has allowed us to earn prestige at a world level. It’s all thanks to the capacity and experience of our tanneries and our skilled workforce.”

Argentina produced 115 million pairs of shoes in 2011 but only exported two million of them. CIC is committed to increasing the amount of trade its member companies do with customers overseas.
