Prime minister visits Mephisto factory

The prime minister of France, François Fillon, has toured the factory that high-end footwear brand Mephisto runs in Sarrebourg in the east of the country.

After touring the facility, which produces 20,000 pairs of handmade Mephisto shoes every day, Mr Fillon said the footwear company was an example that showed it was still possible to manufacture in France products that attract high levels of demand from overseas markets.

Mephisto exports 80% of its output and currently has customers in 86 countries. It was the favoured footwear brand of the tenor Luciano Pavarotti before his death in 2007.
