Reports from Belarus say that the prime minister, Mikhail Myasnikovich, has given his backing to a tannery in Gatovo that is aiming to increase its production levels by 50%.

Mr Myasnikovich has said he would like more of the footwear Belarusian consumers buy to come from domestic manufacturers and the tannery will need to increase its production to supply the necessary leather. The tannery was set up in the 1980s with support from Italian contractors.

The prime minister suggested that two new footwear manufacturing firms could be set up to supply the middle and upper segments of the market.
