Mexico confirms it will take antidumping action on shoes from China

A tariff agreement on imports from China of products including footwear came to an end on December 12. Minister for the economy, Bruno Ferrari, met with footwear industry leaders in León in the days following the change. After the meeting, both the minister and footwear industry associations made statements to Mexican media confirming the start of a formal process to impose antidumping duties on Chinese shoes coming into the country.
Leading figures in the industry in Mexico have complained of shoes coming into the country from China at a cost lower than the value of the raw materials, sometimes substantially less than $1 per pair. The government has said it has helped talks with its counterpart in China to try to reach a mutual agreement in making sure whatever practices permit pricing at this level come to an end.
Mr Ferrari said that, because no agreement was possible, Mexico will impose antidumping measures "during the first two months of 2012 at the latest". He added: "We cannot allow these anti-competitive practices to cause harm to the Mexican footwear industry".
