Record year for Argentinean shoe production

08/12/2011
Argentina's footwear industry association, CIC, has said the country's manufacturers are on course for a record year, increasing production by 8.5% compared to last year to reach 115 million pairs.

CIC said that 60% of the shoes produced in Argentinean factories in 2011 were made of leather. It also said that women's shoes accounted for more than 50% of sales, children's shoes for around 30% and men's shoes for the other 20%.

Domestically produced shoes supply 82% of the demand on the Argentinean market, CIC added, with footwear imports, which are carefully controlled by the authorities in Argentina, of between 20 million and 22 million pairs for the year. Brazil is the biggest overseas supplier with around 75% of total imports.
