Reports from China say that 7,000 workers at a Pou Chen footwear factory in Dongguan went on strike in November and were involved in confrontations with local police.

According to Reuters, ten workers were injured and 19 arrested in clashes with the police after workers staged a protest outside the factory and then began a march towards local government offices. They were complaining about pay and working conditions after Taiwanese manufacturing group Pou Chen allegedly fired 18 middle managers and threatened to cut workers' bonus payments.

Media in Taiwan have quoted Pou Chen as saying it has had to make changes in the face of falling export orders and that it has tride hard to communicate its position to workers in China. However, what it called a lack of understanding on the part of Chinese workers led to the industrial action.

Pou Chen said it would continue to negotiate with unions and other groups representing workers at its Chinese factories.
