Brazilian footwear exports down in first ten months

Brazilian footwear industry association Abicalçados has said the value of exports of shoes from Brazil in the first ten months of 2011 is down by 13.6% compared to the same period last year. The volume of exports fell by 24% over the same period.

At the same time, the value of shoes imported into the South American country over the January-October period rose by 44.5% compared to a year ago.

Between January and October 2011, Brazilian footwear firms exported 91.1 million pairs, compared to 119.3 million pairs over the same months in 2010. Earnings for the ten-month period were $1 billion in 2011 and $1.2 billion in 2010.

Retailers and wholesalers brought 30.6 million pairs into Brazil in the first ten months of 2011, with a value of $378.9 million.
