Luxury shoe designer Stefano Ferragamo has said Brazil has all the qualities required to take up a prominent position among the countries designing, making and selling luxury goods.

“Italy is number one,” Florence-based Mr Ferragamo told the audience at the World Leather Congress in Rio de Janeiro on November 9, “but Brazil can be number two in terms of high-end shoes and leathergoods. It has the raw material, the design capability, the fantasy, the art and the fashion sense. I will come back here in five years and Brazil will occupy the number-two position. It will be one of the best places in the world for talented designers to come.”

He drew a contrast with China saying that design talent there is not given enough time to learn at the hands of a master before being pitched into the frenetic world of meeting manufacturing deadlines. He believes ten years are required for people to learn properly to design perfect luxury shoes.
