Thailand: Ecco makes flood statement

Footwear brand Ecco has warned that flood damage at its shoe factory and tannery in Ayutthaya in Thailand could keep the facilities there out of action for “several months”.

However, the company said it was confident of being able to keep its production programme largely on track by adding shifts at other Ecco sites in Asia and Europe.

“We are concentrating on minimising the effects on our customers across all markets. We have seen a very rapid response from our global supplier network and an overwhelming commitment from them,” said Ecco’s chief operating officer, Michael Hauge Sørensen, in a statement on October 19.

Thailand’s worst flooding for 50 years has cost more than 300 lives already and has damaged the homes and livelihoods of millions of other people. Flood waters hit the Ecco site in Ayutthaya on October 5. The company has said its 5,000 employees are safe.
