Puma revamps Suede shoe

22/09/2011
Textile manufacturer Toray has worked with sports brand Puma to develop material from 100% recycled polyester fibres that will replace the suede in the Suede shoe that Puma first launched in the 1970s. The change in material will result in only a small change in the shoe’s name; the new version will be called the Re-Suede.

Puma has said “every aspect of the shoes has been designed with environmental impact in mind” and it includes a new outsole material, Double R Rice Rubber. This material replaces a portion of the rubber content with a rice husk filler, reducing the overall rubber needed, saving fossil fuel energy in the manufacturing process.

Another energy saving comes the shoe’s light weight; this means it requires less fuel to transport the shoe to points of sale; Puma has calculated this at 15 tonnes of carbon emissions for every 10,000 pairs shipped. The Re-Suede will be sold in PUMA’s Clever Little Bag, a sustainable packaging initiative it introduced in April 2010 to replace traditional shoeboxes.
