Reports of strike at Bata partner factory in Kenya

15/09/2011
More than 250 workers at Foot Plus, a Kenyan outsource manufacturer making shoes for the Bata Shoe Company went on strike at the start of September over pay.

Women workers at the company have claimed that they earn too little to look after their families, in spite of working long hours. Local media have claimed some workers are receiving levels of pay around $1 a day.

Leather industry union leaders are reported to have attempted to intervene directly with Bata on behalf of the workers. In subsequent statements, Bata insisted the problems were between the outsource manufacturing company and its employees.
