León tanneries export more to Guatemala

Exports of leather from the tanneries in the Mexican state of Guanajuato have increased exports to Guatemala by 60% so far in 2011, an industry association has reported.

Iván Soto, president of León-based organisation Cofoce, has 70 companies in Guanajuato are now exporting materials to Guatemala’s footwear sector. Twelve of these companies are tanners or raw materials suppliers, with Pieles Atlántico, Curtidos San Paulo, Industrias San & Per, Vicpoly Tenería Collazo, Tenería Panamericana del Bajío, Niabbal’s, Vázquez Torres and Grabados Exóticos González among the names.

He said nubuck, suede, leather with exotic finishes and for cowboy boot manufacture were in particular demand in the Central American country.

“Guatemala is a country of 13 million people,” Mr Soto said, “and its footwear manufacturers are producing around 35 million pairs a year, which makes it attractive to any supplier organisation here because of our common language, the proximity and the easy trade flows between our two countries.”
