First-half growth for Chinese leather sector

China registered growth of 21.8% during the first six months of 2011, the China Leather Industry Association has reported. Export earnings over the period reached $17.9 billion compared to $14 billion for the first half of 2010.

Exports of leather shoes had a value of $4.9 billion, up from $4.4 billion in the January-June period of 2010, growth of 11.4%. Chinese tanners exported finished and semi-finished leather worth $228.8 million during the six-month period, an increase of 21.8%, and exports of raw hides and skins increased in value by 37.5% to $2.7 million.

On negative note, leather garments showed a declined of 16% to just over $273 million.

China imported leather sector goods with a value of nearly $4.5 billion over the same period, an increase of 20.8%.
