Sri Lanka: footwear industry aims for growth
Sri Lanka’s Leather Footwear Advisory Council (LFAC) has said the country’s footwear industry is expected to see a healthy growth due to the increase in the per capita footwear sale. At present it has reached the average of two pairs for a person, according to the LFAC.
Currently, 15 footwear companies are operating in Sri Lanka under different brands and non-brands.
Sri Lanka’s footwear export during 2009/10 was $17 million, whereas the leather and leather products export was $13 million. Industry sources said the industry is in need of the latest technology and machinery to improve footwear production in the country.
LFAC chairman, Ranjith Hattiarchchy, said Sri Lanka could outsource components and material essential for the footwear industry, and should expect to build new contacts with footwear manufacturers around the world.
He said that Sri Lanka has the potential to develop the footwear industry and that India will be a good partner in helping Sri Lanka to promote its footwear industry. To give a boost to the sector, the LFAC is in the process of organising a footwear exhibition in Colombo in February 2012. The purpose of the exhibition is to showcase Sri Lanka and to promote it as a major hub in the region. Major Asian footwear manufacturers including those from India and China will be participating.
Mr Hettiarachchy also stated that India and China can give support to Sri Lanka with technology and necessary machinery. Therefore, the proposed exhibition would be a good opportunity for obtaining knowledge and technical know-how for the industry.
