35,000 shoe jobs at stake in Mexico

21/07/2011
The president of the Guanajuato Footwear Association in Mexico, Demetrio Armando Martín Dueñas, has claimed that 700 footwear firms and 35,000 jobs will be at risk when tariffs on shoes imported into Mexico from China come to an end in December.

Mr Martín Dueñas said his organisation may organise a public protest to urge the authorities to negotiate an extension to the tariffs.

Local tanning industry association Cicur has said it will support the protests. Its president,
Ricardo Gallardo Barbosa, told local media: "Although China's strong point is shoes made from synthetic materials, this problem will certainly affect all sectors, including tanneries."
