ANCI complains as Italy cuts back on overseas trade institute

15/07/2011
ANCI, the National Association of Italian Footwear Manufacturers, has expressed concern about the transfer of the functions of the Italian Institute for Foreign Trade (ICE) to the ministry for foreign affairs. The government announced the change at the end of June.

ICE had offices around the world and 14 in different parts of Italy. Twelve of the 14 Italian offices will close and Italian embassies and consulates will take up the work of the overseas offices. The newly elected president of ANCI, Cleto Sagripanti, has expressed concern at these developments, saying they are creating “a climate of uncertainty for enterprises”.

He said companies in the footwear industry had begun to notice “a slight upturn” in their fortunes and needed help to continue their push into overseas markets. Mr Sagripanti said ANCI also had a concern about a loss of the focus on helping Italy’s small and medium enterprises under the new structure. He explained: “Over the years, ICE has guaranteed the footwear manufacturing sector a qualified and effective support network for promoting Italian-made products through trade fairs, missions, meetings, events and congresses. It is absolutely vital that Italian companies are not denied this support and this professionalism, and that we safeguard valuable human resources which, within ICE, have helped support companies.”
