German outdoor footwear firm Hanwag has unveiled a 'BIO shoe' at OutDoor (14-17 July, Friedrichshafen)  claimimng it is "the first outdoor footwear manufacturer to use BIO leather for the upper of mountain and trekking boots".

The leather used is combined tanned, meaning it is "fully hydrophobic but contains 50% less chromium than conventionally mineral tanned upper leather," according to Hanwag. The leather comes from cattle which lived on certified organic farms, Hanwag says.

For the lining, Hanwag has used anti-allergenic, chormium free leather lining. The two models are for spring 2012.
