Industry sources in Peru have said the country’s footwear exports to southern neighbour Chile could achieve a value in excess of $3.3 million, which would represent a 30% increase on the figure for 2010. The figures come from the Lima Footwear Association.

Peru’s footwear industry experienced a substantial jump in exports to Chile in 2010, with a value of $2.6 million compared to only $228,000 in 2009. In the first five months of 2011, exports to Chile have been worth $1.5 million, which is 19% more than in the same period last year.

According to Chile’s footwear industry, Fedeccal, consumers in Latin America’s most developed economy buy an average of four pairs of shoes a year each, making the size of the country’s market 68 million pairs of shoes a year. Of these, only 10 million pairs are produced in Chile itself.
