Spain: the footwear retail landscape is changing
09/06/2011
DBK said footwear retail chains and non-specialist outlets such as major supermarkets and department stores had gained market share in recent years, while independent footwear retailers’ share of the market has declined.
Independent retailers experienced a fall in sales of 7.6% in 2010, achieving just over EUR 1 billion. Their share is now 35.2%, whereas in 2008 it was 40.5%.
Women’s shoes accounted for 55% of total sales in 2010, with men’s contributing 25% of the total and children’s shoes 20%.
DBK said it was expecting a small increase in the size of the market in 2011, putting the projected figure at 0.5%. Its prediction was that retail chains could grow their sales by 4% in 2011, with the market share of independent shoe stores continuing to decline.
