Elche protesters avoid prison

Seven years after Chinese footwear traders lost shoes and sales premises in a fire in the Spanish city of Elche, those accused of causing the damage have been found guilty.

The incident involved local people who worked in footwear manufacture. When Chinese companies opened wholesale operations on a local industrial estate to sell cheaper Chinese-made shoes to Spanish retailers, the protesters believed it represented a clear case of anti-competitive trade and took matters into their own hands.

Twenty-eight people were investigated for their involvement and public prosecutors called for prison sentences for them if found guilty. However, a judge said at a final court hearing on May 3 that it would be enough for one Chinese-owned company, Daermei Shoes Trading, to receive compensation of more than EUR 25,000 from the accused. Daermei said it had lost 50,000 pairs of shoes in the fire.
