Keen adds to footwear warmth

Adding to its Keen Warm antimicrobial insulating material based on bamboo charcoal, the company has now come up with Keen Warm Plus. Insulation is created by storing and trapping air which has been warmed up by body temperature. But warm air is often lost through the sole as the wearer walks.
Keen Warm Plus is a composite of three different layers of heat-trapping material in the midsole, which ensures warmth is kept in and cold is kept out.
Keen has described the technology as “a sandwich of heat-trapping materials”. There is a honeycomb layer at the top made of flexible EVA to trap warm air underfoot, a woollen felt layer for warmth in the middle, completed with a foil (made from proprietary material called Thermal Heat Shield) underlay to reflect heat back up to the foot.
Models incorporating the technology include the Revel, a lightweight, high-tech men’s boot in waterproof nubuck leather. As well as Keen Warm Plus, it has a new dual-zone outsole to offer maximum traction on snow and ice.
