Mexico: national leather museum project receives initial funding

Private investor have raised enough money, around $500,000, to match a contribution from the city of León to get a national leather and footwear museum project off the ground.

Local media have estimated that it will cost almost $20 million in total to establish the museum, but the federal government, as well as the state of Guanajuato and the city of León, have all pledged enough money to cover more than half the costs.

With the first $1 million in place, construction work can begin on a site of nearly 6,000 square-metres, where the museum, to be known as Munpic, will have its home.

León is a major centre of footwear and leather production.
