Bangladesh urged to provide more technical training
Ghulam Hussain, the Commerce Secretary of Bangladesh, recently said the country should focus more on imparting technical education, while speaking in the capacity of a chief guest at a seminar on ‘Awareness Building on Product Standards and Environment of Leather Goods and Footwear’.
Bangladesh needs to emphasize more on imparting technical and vocational education, as it is not possible to generate skilled workforce with general education, the official said. He also said that, in order to generate a skilled workforce, a minimum of 70% of the colleges need to be transformed into institutions that impart technical knowledge.
He suggested that the country should set up a distinct ministry for technical education.
The seminar was jointly held by the Leather goods and Footwear Manufactures and Exporters Associations (LFMEAB) and Leather Sector Business Promotion Council under the Ministry of Commerce.
Mr Hussain said that there are presently 15 functional firms in the country’s leather industry, while two more are on their way to enter the sector. This is likely to give rise to heavy demand for skilled workers, making it essential to lay more emphasis on generating a skilled workforce by imparting technical education.
