These companies increased their total turnover in the first six months of last year to just over EUR 1 billion, up by 3.6% compared to the first half of 2009.
Domestic sales accounted for EUR 724 million of this total. On presenting the figures, VDL said they suggested the domestic footwear market had “stagnated” in the first half of the year, but the organisation was quick to point to an increase in export sales over the same period of 13.5%. It also said that, while the final figures are not available yet, domestic sales increased in the second half of 2010 and export sales increased further.
German footwear brands make around 30 million pairs of shoes a year in Germany, but are responsible for the production overseas of a further 120 million pairs a year.
