Inditex denies shoe retail chain plans
27/01/2011
The group, parent of fashion chain Zara, said in a statement: “We can confirm that Inditex has no plans on the table to set up a new chain.” This is at odds with reports that appeared in more than 20 Spanish media outlets on January 27 that a chain specialising in the sale of shoes was part of the company’s strategy.
Inditex already has a footwear company, Tempe. Based in the footwear manufacturing hub of Elche, Tempe’s role at present is to design and produce shoes for Zara and several of the group’s other fashion chains. Tempe has no shops of its own, but was responsible for the production of 47.7 million pairs of shoes in 2010, an increase of 18.4% on the volume it achieved the year before.
Newspapers, including prominent ones in Inditex’s home region, Galicia, said unnamed footwear industry sources had claimed the group was planning the new launch.
