Ciatec idea could work in shoes for diabetics

24/01/2011
Mexico’s Centre of Applied Innovation in Competitive Technologies (Ciatec), founded in 1976 to provide the country’s footwear and tanning industry with new technology, has developed a prototype medical device that can detect poor circulation in people’s feet.

Ciatec’s idea is to use a non-invasive scanner to measure the flow of blood to the extremities, with obvious possible applications in specialist footwear for at-risk groups, including people with diabetes.

The organisation said on making the announcement that it realised it still had a lot of work to do to turn the idea into a commercial product, but it said laboratory tests so far on the prototype had been very promising.
