Shoe brands in Valencia target US for online sales

A footwear industry association in the Valencia region in Spain (Avecal) has urged member companies to make more of the rise of shoe sales on the internet.

Avecal said markets such as the US were experiencing a large rise in sales of footwear online. “The internet is becoming an extremely important sales channel for shoes,” Avecal said in a statement, “but the footwear sector in Valencia is less well equipped to take advantage of this than many of its competitors in other parts of the world.”

It said internet users in the US were likely already to number more than 200 million, two-thirds of the total population. In the first quarter of 2009, online shoppers in the US spent $34 billion online, 10% more than during the same period the year before. This has led Avecal to conclude that Valencia’s footwear brands need to “change their business models” to make them more internet-focused.

In the course of 2010, Avecal carried out a study with a group of member companies, which resulted in a “good practice handbook” to help footwear companies in the region set up a good online sales strategy, specifically for the US market.

A one-day workshop will take place midway through February to present the handbook to member companies with a view to helping them launch successful online sales of their shoes to consumers in the US.
