Strike support levels disputed

Trade union sources in Portugal have claimed that workers in footwear factories across the country gave strong support to a general strike that took place there on November 24.

Unions said the level of support among Portugal's most important manufacturing industries, including footwear, was "significant", with some shoe factories remaining without workers for the day.

However, business leaders have claimed that private-sector companies were scarcely affected by the day of action, estimating workers' participation at around 5%.

The strike came as Portugal's parliament was preparing to approve austerity measures in the face of a national deficit of around EUR 160 billion.
