A footwear brand inspired by Ötzi, the mummified man found in 1991 in the Ötztal Alps on the border between Austria and Italy, has just released its collection for autmn-winter 2010–2011. Ötzi has been carbon dated to 3300 BC, inspring a US footwear brand to call itself Oetzi3300.

Designed in a glass house green shed in Malibu, California, one of the most prominent items in the collection is the OTZ1-Troop boot, which has 1.8mm thick, 100% veg-tanned leather, an internal sock membrane and a water-resistant coating.

Ötzi was found wearing nothing more than the basic essentials he needed for survival—gear for protection and warmth, as well as a unique pair of shoes. These were simple, yet functional. The soles of his shoes were made of bearskin. Deer hide was used for the top panels and a netting made of tree bark. Soft grass went around the foot and in the shoe which functioned like modern socks.

Oetzi3300 claims to have incorporated these “basic essentials from the past” in a fresh and relevant way for today’s market.
