Leather and footwear can help in Minas Gerais

11/11/2010
The state government in Minas Gerais has launched a new platform for attracting new businesses to its northern region. The plan will put strong emphasis on sustainable development.

To promote and explain the idea, the authorities arranged a seminar on November 11, aiming to help the 89 towns that make up the northern region learn more about setting up industrial zones, as well as understand more about business management and ways to improve infrastructure.

A recent study carried out in the northern region found that just five of the 89 towns—Montes Claros, Pirapora, Janaúba, Várzea da Palma and Bocaiúva—contributed more than 60% of the regional gross domestic product. The new plan envisages 116 projects to bring more than 50,000 jobs and increase wealth across the region.

Leather and footwear are among the sectors to feature among the projects.
