Police seize shoes

Police in Spain’s main footwear-producing province, Alicante, have raided warehouses at the Carrús industrial park near Elche and have seized an estimated 250,000 pairs of shoes.

The operation, which took three days to complete, took place after Spanish footwear brand Xti complained that shoes manufactured in Asia and being imported into Spain were infringing its intellectual property by copying its designs.

A police statement said the exercise had succeeded in closing down “the largest distribution operation for counterfeit footwear in the province of Alicante”. Officers took 25 people into custody for questioning, 17 of them from China.
