Safety footwear is a local affair

More than 90% of safety shoes sold in Mexico are made locally, the president of the National Footwear Industry Association (Canaical), Jorge Schmidt, has said.

The state of Guanajuato alone has 51 factories dedicated to safety footwear at the moment, each employing between 50 and 100 people, making specialist products for the oil, mining, metal and automotive industries at the combined rate of 7 million pairs a year.

Mr Schmidt has told local media that the sector benefits from a lack of imported and contraband competitor products coming into the Mexican market. A policy at state oil company Pemex of favouring Mexican suppliers has helped.
