A new report by the employment authorities in the town of Houjie in southern China has said that the employee turnover rate is as high as 15% in most of footwear factories in Dongguan city.

The report said there was a substantial gap between demand and supply in the labour market there. The main labour source is younger people who tend to have higher expectations in terms of pay and conditions, making it more likely they will leave one employer for another after only short periods of time.

According to the China Leather Industry Association, the report’s authors said 250 footwear manufacturers from the Pearl River Delta region had attended job fairs they arranged throughout the month of October. Many raised their salary offerings by as much as 15% to attract skilled workers.
