Shoe firm is a model of entrepreneurship

The University of La Rioja and the region's Chamber of Commerce have combined to publish the history of local footwear manufacturer Grupo Hergar as a case study in entrepreneurship.

Grupo Hergar, which manufactures shoes under the Callaghan and Gorila brand names, began life 40 years ago in a house in the town that is now the region's shoe capital, Arnedo. Founder Basilio García decided to start the company by having his whole family take part in the manufacturing process. His son, also Basilio, who is now managing director, attended a formal presentation of the case study at the university at the end of October.

Mr García recalled that when his father started out, life was tough because of the economic climate in Spain at that time. "We had seven tough years and had to make a lot of sacrifices," he said. "We talk about today about the crisis. But my father always reminds us that, in the beginning, there was no market for shoes made here. We had to create the market."
